The Clever Body
By Gabor Csepregi,
President, Dominican University College University of Calgary Press, 2006
In Western civilization, we have come to regard the body as an instrument or a machine that responds to external challenges but does not have a life or creativity of its own. Thanks to some of its inherent capabilities, however, the living body can act in a highly intelligent and creative manner. All of us have noticed from time to time that our body can move naturally, without any conscious effort; it can adapt to new situational demands and propose unexpected solutions. While skiing or rock climbing or sailing, we may have abandoned ourselves to our bodily timing and responsiveness, our acute feeling for new solutions. In The Clever Body, Gabor Csepregi describes in detail the nature and scope of these innate abilities - sensibility, spontaneity, mimetic faculty, sense of rhythm, memory, and imagination - and reflects on their significance in human life.
Official Book Launch September 21st 2006 at the Dominican University College.

Professor Richard Sembera
Start: May 1st, exam: June 22nd
Monday, 5:30 to 8:30
Thursday, 5:30 to 8:30
In the popular mind, theories concerning the ethical treatment of animals tend to be associated either with Eastern religious beliefs or with utilitarian ethical systems. In fact, the problem of the correct treatment of animals has always been a major concern of Western philosophy, though it has not always been an explicit topic of discussion. This course will outline the history of Western thinking on the matter from Pythagoras through Aquinas to Schopenhauer, Schweitzer, and Heidegger. It will also evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of more recent and more popular theories from Bentham to Singer. This course will be destined to anyone who has an interest in the treatment of animals today, and wants to obtain an in-depth understanding of issues.
Cost of admission: $420
