École biblique de Jérusalem in Ottawa
Luke, the Historian
Seminar
offered by École Biblique de Jérusalem
invited by the Dominican University College
in Ottawa
from May 9th to June 23rd 2006
An American Première
Since its foundation in 1890 by Father Lagrange the École Biblique et Archéologique Française in Jérusalem has formed many generations of world-famous specialists in biblical exegesis, in archeology and in ancient near-eastern history.
For some years now, because of political unrest in the region, some students have not dared register at the École, thus depriving themselves of a unique study and research environment.
The Dominican University College in Ottawa and the École biblique have signed a partnership so that the École biblique will be invited to offer, for the first time in America, a seminar in exegesis. This seminar is opened to any graduate student working towards a Master’s degree or a PhD in the faculties of theology or religious studies. It could be a profitable complement to one’s formation or an integral part of a graduate program.
Calendar
This will be a 45-hour seminar worth 3 university credits. It will be held over seven weeks from Mai 9 th to June 23 rd 2006, on Tuesdays and Fridays (from 8h30 am to 11h30 am).
Lecturer
The lecturer will be Professor Justin Taylor, s.m., lecturer at the École Biblique, well-known for his publications on christian origins, especially on the Acts of the Apostle. A list of his publications is available at http://ebaf.op.org .
Theme
This seminar will focus on Luke, the Historian.
Luke, the author of the Acts of the Apostles, has generally been reckoned to be an historian, and Acts regarded as the first work of church history. But some today (e.g. Richard Pervo) maintain that the book of Acts is really a work of fiction, and many would approach it as a source for understanding Luke’s theology rather than as a source for understanding the history of Christian origins (thus Ernst Haenchen). It is important to see what the ancients understood by ‘history’ (historiography), and so whether Acts should properly be considered as aspiring to be a work of history, and – if so – whether it does so successfully.
In this seminar we shall first look at the Greek tradition (or rather, traditions) of historical writing, to which the Book of Acts is generally compared. We shall also look at Biblical and Jewish history, in order to situate Luke as an historian.
In the last analysis, Luke, like every author, has to be judged on his own performance. We are not looking for one single pigeonhole into which Acts must go. We could imagine that Luke is inspired or influenced by several kinds of narrative writing. It is even at least conceivable that he has, to some extent, invented a new literary genre to suit his purpose. In any case, a good knowledge of what the ancients meant by history and also related genres (notably biography and the novel) will at least enable us to divine Luke’s intentions and to judge his performance.
