Amy Gordon Awarded Canada Graduate Scholarship

Dominican University College student Amy Gordon was awarded the Canada Graduate Scholarship, offered by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. This $17,500 scholarship was offered to only 30 applicants in philosophy throughout Canada this year.

Amy Gordon, from Marmara Ontario, will be completing her Bachelor with honor in Philosophy this year and will be starting her M.A. in September 2007. The subject of her research will be sorrow.

Despite the fact that sorrow is a fundamental human question, it has rarely been the object of serious philosophical analysis. Without seeking to provide extrinsic meaning to sorrow, Amy Gordon would like to formulate a positive discourse on sorrow from the aspect of a rational consciousness or reflexivity in the subject. The research will draw on the work of five authors, namely, Aquinas, Descartes, Nussbaum, Smith, and Spinoza.

For a day, professors of the Pastoral Institute, of the Department of Philosophy and of the Faculty of theology of the Dominican University College will exchange their thoughts on the stakes of these interventions and the effects these have on the construction of these discourses. New Ethics course in January

In January, the Department of Philosophy presents Prof. Wendy Hamblet, Research Professor at the DUC. She is the author of The Sacred Monstrous, Reflections on Violence and the Human Communities (Lexington Books, 2004). The course will be held on Wednesdays, from 19:00 to 22:00.

Themes in Contemporary Ethics: Justice, Truth and Violence: a study of challenges to global peace
Professor Wendy C. Hamblet, Ph.D., C.C.C. Reg., S.A.C. (Dip)
This course introduces the student to major philosophical methods of inquiry into moral questions. These methods of inquiry will then be rigorously applied to issues of contemporary relevance—the problems of truth, justice, violence, war, terror, civilization, good, evil. The course focuses upon the “truths” encoded in cultural and political tradition and communicated in media products. It critically appraises the Western worldview and theories of subjectivity from the standpoint of their underlying logic and moral messages, and assesses the ethical productivity of that worldview in configuring behaviours within society and at the global level. Our aim will be to resolve, as far as is possible, the paradox of the gap between the lofty ideals of human beings and the fact of the bloody history of the human species.

New Publication - Form and Being, Studies in Thomistic Metaphysics

By Lawrence Dewan, O.P., Professor at the Dominican University College Departement of philosophy

Book Launch at the College, October 19th, 2006 at 7:30 pm.

The latest volume in the Studies in Philosophy and the History of Philosophy series contains thirteen essays by Lawrence Dewan on metaphysics, the vision of reality from the viewpoint of being. While they take the form of interpretation of the thought of Thomas Aquinas, they are meant as a contribution to perennial philosophy, truth that transcends particular cultures and eras.
The distinctive contribution of this volume is its focus on the role of form among the various items in the ontological analysis. The most prominent Thomistic metaphysician in the twentieth century laid great stress on the role of the act of being. Dewan's essays present what is essentially the same picture, but in a way that emphasises the continuity between Christian philosophers and their predecessors in ancient Greece.

Book Launch - The Clever Body

By Gabor Csepregi,
President, Dominican University College
University of Calgary Press, 2006

Thursday, September 21, 2006, 7 pm at the Dominican University College.

In Western civilization, we have come to regard the body as an instrument or a machine that responds to external challenges but does not have a life or creativity of its own. Thanks to some of its inherent capabilities, however, the living body can act in a highly intelligent and creative manner. All of us have noticed from time to time that our body can move naturally, without any conscious effort; it can adapt to new situational demands and propose unexpected solutions. While skiing or rock climbing or sailing, we may have abandoned ourselves to our bodily timing and responsiveness, our acute feeling for new solutions. In The Clever Body, Gabor Csepregi describes in detail the nature and scope of these innate abilities - sensibility, spontaneity, mimetic faculty, sense of rhythm, memory, and imagination - and reflects on their significance in human life.
